The onset of warmer weather means ant infestations are starting up. While getting rid of ants is not the most difficult job for homeowners but not for Ant Pest Control, it can be one of the trickiest. If you see ants and spray them with an over-the-counter product, you will drive them deeper into your home and property, spreading the infestation.
The following describes four steps to resolve an infestation of ants.
Species Identification
Ants come in many different species, all of which have specific sets of behaviors. For effective control, the solution must be targeted to the type of ant that has come into your home. If you are unable to identify the ant, call a pest control company for assistance.
Entry Point
The next step is to determine where the ants have entered the house. When you find it, you can put an ant repellent into place. If you prefer a natural approach, you can try these solutions:
• Baking soda
• Cucumber peels
• Fresh mint
• Lemon juice
• Tea tree oil
• Chalk
• Grapefruit seed extract
• Garlic, cinnamon and other strong herbs
Once the ants are gone, you should seal up the point of entry with caulk or other materials to prevent them from returning.
Nest Location
It is nearly impossible to get rid of ants unless the nest is destroyed. This will not happen unless the queen dies. The most effective way to accomplish this is by putting down bait where you see the ants. It is a slow-acting poison that allows the drones to carry it back to the nest and share it with others. If the baits are not effective, a pest control company will need to come in and take care of the nest.
Attraction Removal
Ants are typically drawn into a home by food particles. Keep your kitchen clean by wiping down the counters and sweeping the floors after each meal preparation. Take the garbage out daily and keep food sealed in plastic containers. Spring is the peak time for ants, and even the smallest crumb can bring them into your home.
